How to create Pixel Stretch Effect In Photoshop

Pixel Stretch Effect is an awesome effect you may have seen everywhere these days. But did you knew that it is really easy to make it in Photoshop?

Yes, you heard me right. It is really easy to make this effect in photoshop in a matter of few steps.
so, let's get started.

Firstly you need an interesting photo. I have chosen this image.

This effect looks good on photos that have dynamic pose, for example, a ballerina, a dancer, sportsperson in action and many more.

Next, if your image has a background isolate the subject to a transparent background. You can easily isolate your subject using magic wand or pen tool.

Now comes the main part. You will find a number of ways to this but I have come with a new method that I have developed. follow these steps:

1) Duplicate the image 2 times. Let's name the top layer Main and bottom layer right. Hide the original image.

2) Now move the right layer to the right by holding Shift + right arrow 4 times. This will change according to your image but for my image 4 works just fine.

3) Select the Marquee tool and select the right image layer by Ctrl-clicking on the thumbnail of the right layer on the layer panel.

4) Press Ctrl + Alt-click on the thumbnail of the main layer. This will result in only the intersecting part of the image being selected. Now press Ctrl + Shift + C Followed by Ctrl + Shift + V. this will copy and paste it onto the new layer. Hide the Main and right layer.

5) Alt Click and drag it to right keep it overlapped. Make many such copies. I made 20 such copies! The point is to make a complete image from top to bottom. You may need more or fewer copies depending on your image.

6) Select the single column marquee tool and click on the image where it full from top to bottom. Now press Ctrl + Shift + C Followed by Ctrl + Shift + V. this will copy and paste it onto the new layer. Hide all the other copies.

7) You may not be able to see anything but there is :) Press  Ctrl + T and stretch it to the right and there you have it pixel stretch effect.

 8) Turn on the original layer ie unhide it. Move the pixel stretch behind it. Apply a layer mask and mask out the areas on the left of the image as well as the parts not required. Finally, you have the Final result.

There are many variations to this effect. It all is about your creativity. This is how simple it is to create Pixel stretch effect in photoshop.

Practice and play around with this effect and 1 day you will be able to create awesome art with it in a professional manner and become a Really Creative Graphic Designer.

So let's get started,

1) First of all open your image in Photoshop. Duplicate the layer 2 times and name one layer  Red and second copy Green.

2) Now Desaturate both red and Green layer by pressing Shift + Ctrl + U or by going to the Image>Adjustments >Desaturate.

3) Double click on the red layer to open layer style. Turn off the Green and blue channel by deselecting the check mark against G and B under advanced blending options and click OK.

It might seem nothing happened but it did. Move the layer either to left or right depending on the effect you want.

It might seem nothing happened again but it did. Move the layer either to left or right depending on the effect you want.

5) Now create a new a new layer and fill it with white. Go to filters > filter gallery and select Halftone Pattern. Under pattern type select Line. Size of lines will depend on your image size for my example I have selected 2.

Reduce the opacity according to your requirement. For my example I had to reduce it to 10%.

6) All done. For the final step all you have to do is to create a composite Image by selecting all the layers and Press Shift + ctrl + alt +E. This creates a composite layer. Now select the rectangle marquee tool and bit by bit select areas you want to create the glitch effect and move it either left or right depending on the effect you want.
Select the rectangle marquee tool and drag a small strip like in the example below and drag it to either left or right by pressing Ctrl.

Follow the same process to complete the image. Remember variation is a must. Do not create same size segments. Keep altering the direction of glitch.

Rule of Thirds Explained in simple way

The Rule of Thirds is the most important rule followed in photography and painting. It is also the most important rule followed in cinematography, photography, painting, graphic design or any other design projects.

The Rule of Thirds is a technique that was developed to help to build perfect compositions. It bring life into piece. Composition is the most important part of design. Unless and until your piece has perfect composition it will look lifeless and boring. All the elements in design must be so placed so as to guide the viewer's eye. To help get the perfect composition Rule of thirds acts like magic.

So what exactly is this Rule of thirds?
It a technique wherein you divide your entire artwork into nine equal blocks. This is done by adding 2 horizontal lines intersecting 2 vertical lines at equal distance. Thereby you get 4 intersecting points. This 4 point are considered to be the focal points. All your important elements or the main subject should be placed on these lines or intersecting points. Place your subject on these lines helps guide the viewer eye. Many novice artist have the habit of centering everything. This is absolutely wrong. The idea here is that an off centered piece looks more pleasing to the eye that the dead center.

How to apply The Rule of Thirds?
This is a really simple part. Divide your entire artwork into equal nine parts. This is achieved by adding 2 horizontal lines and 2 vertical lines. For example if your artwork is of size 300px by 300px then add 2 horizonatl line one at 100px and second at 200px. Add Vertical lines at  100px and second at 200px.

The intersecting points are focal points.

These lines are the focal points place your point of interest on these lines or intersecting points. Let's see with an example. In this Image the main subject ie the girl is centered in the image. This does not looking appealing. Now lets apply the rule of thirds and see it transform.

Align the girl either to the right or left vertical line. This way the image is more covered and the eye knows where to look first. The eye goes first to the girl and then goes to the background. This way it becomes more appealing.

See the magic. The rule can be applies to all the images. Let's see another example. Here again the image is centered.

Now let's apply the rule of thirds to this image. Here the image is centered so lets scale it down a bit. Position it so that her eyes align with the top horizontal line.

See now the image looks much better.

This is the magic of rules of third. Keep in mind however that you don't necessarily have to stick to it. Many times rules are meant to broken. You can also achieve great results without it provided some other factors come into play.

Practice and play around with the Rule of thirds and 1 day you will be able to create awesome art with it in a professional manner and become a Really Creative Graphic Designer.
