Complex Color And Color Theory Simplified : understanding color theory made easy

Color is the most important part of not just graphic design but every aspect of life. Right from what color dress should I wear for the party tonight to what color should I have for my living room color is important part of every aspect of life.

We all have studied color and color theory at school. Color is also connected with our emotions some color can evoke anger while others can calm one down. Hence it is very important to choose the right color. We must have understanding about which colors go well together and which compliment each other and likewise which do not match at all. Color Theory helps us understand all of this. Understanding color theory will help designers to select the right color easily.

Artist follow color theory. This make their art look good with perfect color combinations. It is not hard to follow color theory once you understand the very basics of color. Color theory for designers is a must. So lets start with understanding color.

Primary colors: These include Red, Yellow and Blue.

Secondary colors: They are created by mixing equal portions of primary colors. They are
Green, Orange and purple.

Tertiary colors: They are created by mixing primary color with the neighboring secondary color. Like mixing Yellow with Orange we get yellowish orange color. likewise we go on mixing primary color with neighboring secondary color and fill in the gaps.

So that constitutes the basics if colors. Then if we go ahead and separate the color wheel we get warm and cool colors.

We have warm color from red to yellow.
We have cool color from yellow green to purple.
Then we have Hue, Saturation and Value.

Hue : It is just another word for color.

Saturation : It refers to the Intensity of color. That is weather the color is more subtle or more vibrant.

Value : It refers to how dark or light the color is. It gives various shades of color.

Once you get  good with this concepts then we have various modes those are

Monochromatic : This includes shades and tints of same color.

Analogous: This includes colors those are next to each other on the color wheel.
Complementary : This includes colors those are opposite to each other on the color wheel.
Triadic : This includes colors those are spaced equally to each other on the color wheel. It creates vibrant color scheme.
So that concludes the color and color theory. Apart from this there are few things that should be kept in mind while using colors they are choose the right color to fit the mood of the subject, don't use many colors for the text it becomes difficult to read the text. Don't over use the colors keep a balance between text color and background color. Remember just because you can doesn't means you should.

It is important to consider the field of your project and choose the right color scheme. Bright colors have Fun and vibrant but if you have a design project for business you should use neutral color scheme.
