How To Create Scatter Brush In Illustrator

Scatter Brush is Used to create a brush which helps you scatter a object or an art along the length of the path. Many art have objects or a piece of art which is scattered along or around some shape or path. It will be time consuming and tedious task to scatter the objects individually while varying its scale and proportions.

Adobe Illustrator is used to create vector artwork. It helps to create amazing artwork. To create an awesome artwork however requires the use of different brushes.

Brushes allows us to create different strokes of different style and texture. Just like we use different brushes to paint on a canvas to get the desired effect. We can do so in Illustrator as well. Adobe Illustrator provides a library full of brushes you can use in your project. However there is always need for custom brushes. Adobe Illustrator allows you to create your own custom brushes. It is easy to create the brush you want in a matter of few steps.

Brushes are under listed under brush panel. You can open the brushes panel by going to Windows > Brushes. It lists all the default brushes. There are more if click on the upper right icon it opens a drop down menu, select open brush library under which there are all brushes listed categorized under different types.

You can create 5 types of brushes calligraphic, Scatter, art, pattern, and bristle.
So let's see how to create your own brush and how to use scatter brush in illustrator.

Scatter brush is used to disperse an object along the path. Now let's see how to create a Scatter brush. So I will make a brush of this flower that I have created.

For the settings I leave everything to its default. I have selected Hue Shift in colorization menu. This paints with the current stroke color. So let's see how it looks.

As simple as that however not as easy if you don't know what the setting in the dialog box are. So first you need to understand what all the settings are. So let's now create another brush and then go through each of the setting. So I will create the brush with this butterfly that I have created.

Select the butterfly and Click on the new brush icon in brush panel and select Scatter brush. In the dialog box I am going to keep the Size fixed to 50%. Spacing is set to random 52% with variation of 94%. Scatter is also set to random -55% with variation set to 88%. Rotation is set to random 76 degree with variation set to -16 degree.

Size: Determines the size of the brush. You can set the size of the brush to be fixed or random. If you set it be fixed the same size will be scattered along the length of the path or around the shape.
Spacing: This determines the amount of space between each object.
Scatter: This determines how close or further away the object will be scattered on each side of the path. The higher the value the further the object will be scattered from the path.
Rotation: This determines the angle of rotation of the object.
The drop-down menu for each option lets you control the variation. They are fixed, rotation.pressure, bearing and tilt. However, only Fixed and Random are available if you are using mouse. That's exactly my case. Yes I am using a mouse.
Fixed: Sets the size, spacing, scattering, and rotation to fixed.
Random: Creates a brush with random variations in size, spacing, scattering, and rotation. The value in variation field to specifies the range within which the brush characteristic will vary.
Pressure: Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameter based on the pressure of a drawing stylus.
Stylus Wheel: Creates a brush that varies in diameter based on manipulation of the stylus wheel.
Tilt: Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameter based on the tilt of a drawing stylus.
Bearing: Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameter based on the bearing of the pen.
Rotation: Creates a brush that varies in angle, roundness, or diameter based on how the drawing stylus pen tip is rotated.

There are many colorization options to choose from. The dialog box explains it all.

So those are all the setting. Now let's see the result.

Plan your artwork and create multiple brushes according to your requirement. Scatter Brush is quite similar to brush tool in Adobe Photoshop but with vector capabilities. Remember you can always edit the brush after you have created it.

Let's try making a few,
First I will use this flower to make a Scatter brush.

In the dialog box I am going to keep the Size random to 41% with variation set to 84%. Spacing is set to random 91% with variation of 133%. Scatter is also set to random -180% with variation set to 0. Rotation is set to random -50 degree with variation set to 79 degree.

And the result is

Next I will create a scatter brush with this grass

In the dialog box I am going to keep the Size random to 84% with variation set to120%. Spacing is set to random 9% with variation of 10%. Scatter is also set to random64% with variation set to -165. Rotation is set to random -27 degree with variation set to 30 degree.

When used it is like this

So that's how you can go on creating Scatter brushes and then you can combine them to create a single awesome artwork. This is what I made using all the brushes created above. I also made some more with exactly the same brush but I changes few settings to fit my requirements. This is not the most awesome piece but I am happy with how it's come out.

Scatter brush is fun to play with and create awesome artwork. It provides the flexibility of using Photoshop brushes with vector capabilities.  I am using mouse so I am limited in its use. If you are using graphics tablet you have many options to play with and achieve awesome results.
