How to Use Clipping Masks (Adobe Photoshop CS6)

Clipping Masks is a very simple and handy feature in Photoshop CS6. Clipping masks are used for various purposes. Clipping masks are used in photo editing there are certain areas that you don't want to get affected or if you want to place a image in an shape use clipping mask.


Let's see this by example by placing an image in a shape.

1) Make a shape you like on layer 1

 2) Place a image on layer 2.

3) Alt Click between the 2 layer to create a clipping mask. If you find it hard click on the upper right drop-down icon on the layers panel and select Create Clipping Mask. Simplest way would be to press Alt + clt + G.




4) You have your image inside the shape. You can move your image to adjust its position. If you want to remove the clipping mask simply alt click between the layers again.
Things to remember: Always place the image that you want to place inside the shape on top of the shape layer.

You can also use clipping mask to paint inside shape. Let's see this with an example

1) Create an shape you like on layer 1.





2) Make a new layer 2 and click between both layer to create clipping mask. Select the paint brush tool and paint inside the shape. The paint will be applied inside the shape only.
