Pixels Vs Vector ! who will be the winner ?

Digital Art comes in 2 forms. Pixel based and vector based.Adobe Photoshop is pixel based while Adobe Illustrator is Vector based. To understand the difference between the 2 we need to understand what Pixel art means and what Vector Art means.

Pixel Art : Pixel is word formed of 2 words Picture and Element.Pixel art is made of tiny dots that are called pixels. Pixel based graphics are called bitmap or raster Images.

The entire image is formed using tiny dots which are actually small squares. Each square is assigned color value and arranged in a pattern that forms the image. The Clarity of the image depends on the image resolution.Image resolution is number of pixels in a image. Greater the image resolution greater will be the clarity as well as the file size.  Hence if you scale the image it becomes blurry.
Zoom in to max level to see individual pixels. Each pixel is equal in size hence it becomes blurry when you change the scale of the image. If you want a image that you would like to scale up or down then you have to use vector art. Raster is a another word used for pixel based images. When you convert vector art in to pixel art it is called Rasterization. Adobe Photoshop is used to create pixel based Art. The various formats of bitmap images are .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .tiff, .png, ,bmp

Vector Art : It is formed using mathematical calculations that place the given line or shape in 2d or 3d space.
If you scale it up or down it calculates the math and does the scaling hence it does not gets blurred. It is best form to use for logos.Vector graphics are not dependent on image resolution hence the file size is lower as compared to raster images. Logos have to be scaled to any size depending on where they are to be used hence it has to be in vector format.Adobe Illustrator is used to create vector graphics.

Vector graphics are best used to create line art, logos and also type and animation. Type should also be vector as you can scale it up or down without sacrificing its legibility. Vector art is also used in advertisement again because of it advantage to scale the image to any size. Car advertisement also use vector cars so thy can be used in any sized advertisements.

So who is the winner Pixels or vector? No one is superior over the other. It all depends on the purpose for what your design is going to be used.
For example Logos should always be vector so you can scale it up or down and use it where ever you want. While if you want a digital painting that is going to be fixed in size then you can use Adobe Photoshop to create raster graphics. First decide where you art is going to be used. If it going to be fixed size then you can go in for Raster graphics but if you are going to need size variations then the obvious choice is vector graphics.
